What We Do

Our Commitment

Little Dixie is committed to operating with environmental practices and policies that are good for our customers, local businesses and residents. Our local team of environmental managers, engineers and scientists ensures that the long-term management of the site is safe and responsible.

Initiatives

Little Dixie is operated in a manner designed to protect public health and the environment. We regularly monitor and report our activities to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), and we strive to meet or exceed all state and federal regulations. All waste is disposed of within the boundary of a constructed landfill area that has been engineered to protect the environment and meet all federal, state and local regulations. There are many environmental protection systems at the site.

The Landfill team takes multiple steps to protect the environment. All waste is screened to ensure unacceptable waste is not accepted, and our standard operating procedures are designed to exceed the MDEQ standards. More than 650 acres of the Little Dixie Landfill property is dedicated to non-landfill operations.

Protection of all water sources is a priority at Little Dixie Landfill. The Landfill is designed with a highly engineered composite liner system designed to contain any liquids that percolate through the solid waste. The liquids are transferred to a water treatment facility. Surface water at the site is controlled through a series of diversion berms and drainage ditches to preserve its quality. In addition, Little Dixie Landfill assesses groundwater with four individual groundwater monitoring wells. Each well is routinely tested to ensure the groundwater’s quality.

At Little Dixie Landfill, landfill gas is collected through a system of 169 extraction wells. The Landfill’s surface is routinely scanned for gas emissions and exterior gas probes are also regularly monitored to ensure the landfill gas system is operating properly.
